🇬🇧 The similarity between art and religion

Art and religion have an interesting similarity.

I'm Nycka Nunes, I work as a visual artist and fine art photographer.

A few days ago I saw a post from a person on a social network frustrated with the movie “The Blair Witch Project”. I saw this movie in the theater, and at the time I didn't understand one thing that reading about this person's frustration allowed me to understand. At the time, my repertoire regarding art was limited and so was my self-knowledge. I didn't understand the symbology, intentional or not, behind that film. I understood when I read that post. I also didn't understand the symbology behind many other films. Cinema for me, for a long time, was something to pass the time, not to reflect on life or seek self-knowledge.

Music was also purely distracting, until I started listening to songs with lyrics that made me think. Later, I also started to read more about some musicians I liked, read biographies of artists, see interviews, follow the profiles of artists on social networks, and this showed other nuances of their work.

I will limit myself to the examples of music and cinema because they are art forms that everyone has access to, but the same reasoning applies to other art forms.

People also relate similarly to religion. Many can spend their whole lives listening to music to distract themselves, and going to religious activities out of habit, without making any correlation between what is transmitted during a religious ceremony and their lives. Others, like me, at some point realise that art has something to say to them, and so does religion.

Religion is a personal development tool. Art also has its role in personal development. But the role of both is only fulfilled when we allow ourselves to grow, to see the world with a different lens than the one we received from our family and the people we grew up with.

🇵🇹🇧🇷 Semelhança entre arte e religião

Arte e religião têm uma semelhança interessante.

Eu sou Nycka Nunes, trabalho como artista visual e fotógrafa fine art.

Dias atrás vi um post de uma pessoa numa rede social frustrada com o filme “A bruxa de Blair”. Eu vi este filme no cinema, e na época não entendi uma coisa que ler sobre a frustração dessa pessoa me permitiu entender. Na época, meu repertório em relação à arte era limitado e meu autoconhecimento também. Eu não entendia a simbologia, intencional ou não, por trás daquele filme. Fui entender quando vi aquele post. Também não percebia a simbologia por trás de muitos outros filmes. Cinema para mim, por muito tempo foi algo pra passar o tempo, não para refletir sobre a vida ou buscar autoconhecimento. 

A música também era puramente distração, até eu começar a ouvir músicas com letras que me faziam pensar. Mais tarde, também passei a ler mais sobre alguns músicos que eu apreciava, ler biografias de artistas, ver entrevistas, seguir os perfis de artistas nas redes sociais, e isso foi mostrando outros matizes do trabalho deles.

Vou me limitar aos exemplos de música e cinema porque são formas de arte que todo mundo tem acesso, mas o mesmo raciocínio vale para outras formas de arte.

As pessoas também se relacionam de forma semelhante com a religião. Muitas podem passar a vida toda ouvindo músicas para se distrair, e indo às atividades religiosas por hábito, sem fazer qualquer correlação entre o que é transmitido durante uma cerimônia religiosa e sua vida. Outras, como eu, em algum momento percebem que a arte tem algo a lhes dizer, e a religião também.

A religião é uma ferramenta de desenvolvimento pessoal. A arte também tem seu papel no desenvolvimento pessoal. Mas o papel de ambas só é cumprido quando nos permitimos crescer, ver o mundo com lentes diferentes das que recebemos da nossa família e das pessoas com quem crescemos.

How do you, woman, deal with nudity?

I believe that valuing one's own beauty, being a woman, is natural. In my opinion, vanity is something natural in human beings, and it is something that is repressed in men in sexist environments. Something that is changing, mainly through the example of many famous men. Anyone appreciates what is beautiful. And that's why it's natural to seek to feel beautiful to please yourself and others and to attract people to your circles.

Nudity, within Brazilian culture and other cultures - fortunately, not all - is very sexualised. Especially among superficially religious people, who don't see religion as a tool for personal development. On the other hand, female sexuality, in these same cultures, tends to be repressed and judged. So, the woman who, in this context, celebrates her own sensuality and sexuality is, in my view, an admirable woman. Professional photo essays are an option to exalt the woman that you are. In places where nudity is natural, like Finland, it may be strange to realise this possibility. Feel free to share your thoughts on the issue in the comments. My perception today is that nudity, like sex, is natural and they don’t have to go together. Being naked is not necessarily an invitation to sex. Today I manage to plan a nude photo shoot without sexualising the image and create beautiful images. Studying a little of the culture of the countries of northern Europe was very useful in this transformation of vision, but I never discussed the subject with natives. Como você, mulher, lida com a nudez?

Eu sou Nycka Nunes, trabalho como artista visual e fotógrafa fine art. Atendo clientes de todo o mundo e envio meu trabalho para todo o mundo.

Acredito que valorizar a própria beleza, sendo mulher, é natural. A meu ver, vaidade é algo natural nos seres humanos, e é algo reprimido em parte dos homens em ambientes machistas. Algo que está mudando, principalmente através do exemplo de muitos homens famosos. Qualquer pessoa aprecia o que é belo. E por isso é natural buscar sentir-se belo para agradar a si e aos outros e para atrair pessoas para seus círculos.

A nudez, dentro da cultura brasileira e de outras culturas - felizmente, não todas - é muito sexualizada. Principalmente entre pessoas superficialmente religiosas, que não vêem a religião como ferramenta de desenvolvimento pessoal. Por outro lado, a sexualidade feminina, nestas mesmas culturas, tende a ser reprimida e julgada. Então, a mulher que, neste contexto, celebra a própria sensualidade e a própria sexualidade é, a meu ver, uma mulher admirável. Nos lugares onde a nudez é natural, como na Finlândia, talvez seja estranho perceber esta possibilidade. Fique à vontade para compartilhar sua percepção sobre a questão nos comentários. Minha percepção hoje é que a nudez, assim como o sexo, são naturais, e não precisam andar juntos. Estar nu não é necessariamente um convite ao sexo. Hoje consigo planejar um ensaio fotográfico de nudez sem uma sexualização da imagem e criar imagens bonitas. Estudar um pouco da cultura dos países do norte da Europa foi muito útil nessa transformação de visão, mas nunca discuti o assunto com nativos.
