Today I'm going to talk about an art piece that I really like, but it's no longer available: "The Blindness of Common Sense". You can see it in the "Art" highlights of my Nycka Nunes Instagram profile.
I'm Nycka Nunes, a visual artist, and in this blog I talk about my artistic work and also about other professional skills that I've developed throughout my life and that I make available because they are ways to earn money to make more art while helping people who don't have these skills as developed as I do.
The black background represents everything that is ignored by people who blindly follow common sense, what "everyone" does. The red dot, far from the centre, is what they see. The colour and position of the dot have important purposes in the symbolism of the work.
In childhood, we tend to believe everything our parents say, and have our family as a reference for moral and ethical values. Over time, we seek to be accepted by people in the environments that become part of our lives, such as school, neighbourhood, etc. The risk of being rejected scares us, perhaps due to a primitive survival instinct that humans would not be able to survive alone in the wild. And that is why many people do everything they can to fit in. One way to deal with this may be to see our parents' values as absolute truths. Another is a tendency to please everyone. And there are several other ways to deal with the fear of rejection and our relationship with our family of origin.
But... we no longer live in wild environments full of predators.
The centre of the image represents our individual identity, which for those who simply follow common sense without questioning it is something unknown.
The rest of the black area represents the many possibilities for personal development, everything we can learn by meeting and connecting with people with different tastes, experiences and personalities than our own, without losing sight of our identity, without getting lost when entering their universe.
I could talk about this visually simple work for hours, but since many people would not understand or would distort everything, if you want to add your interpretation in the comments, or share your personal development process connecting it to the symbolism of the work, do so.
At the time this text was published, I am raising funds to carry out my first artistic photography project. Learn more about the project and how to contribute as a sponsor or by making a donation here and also the benefits of these contributions, in addition to the satisfaction of supporting my artistic work.
