Destroying your self-image may be the best thing you ever do for yourself

Destroying your self-image may be the best thing you ever do for yourself.

I am Nycka Nunes, a photographer and visual artist, with decades of previous experience in the fashion industry and as a style consultant.

Many people (I would say everyone, but I also say that “everyone” does not exist, so I’ll adjust) notice they feel more attractive in certain clothes, colours, or hairstyles, etc. And while some people do not enjoy seeing themselves naked, others experience it with ease and familiarity.

In photography, as in life, focus is essential. My photographic study of the human soul, “Who you are when no one is watching”, is about exactly this. And… about the destruction of your self-image. But do not be alarmed. As I said at the beginning, destroying your self-image may be the best thing you have ever done for yourself.

In my teenage years and early adulthood, my self-image was very poor. I used to say my self-esteem was “below zero”, but in reality I recognised my own qualities. My self-esteem in relation to appearance was below zero, even though I was tall and slim. And, I do not deny it, this also affected how I believed others perceived the qualities I saw in myself. Some time ago, during a video call with an acquaintance who lives in another country and whom I had not seen for years (neither in person nor on video), I had a chipped tooth and he noticed. I felt awkward. That teenage, insecure Nycka appeared again. And shortly after, I noticed the Nycka who was forced by her maternal family to wear unattractive clothes at school, and yet, despite being extremely shy and insecure, she managed to make several friendships. She was there too. And with her came the Nycka who had the courage, when she started buying her own clothes, to wear pieces that were different, unusual, and aligned with her personal style, instead of something plain and unremarkable just because “everyone wears it”. Those who understand these last two versions of Nycka will already understand where this project is heading. Focus.

In this photographic study, I offer clients a positive destruction of their self-image, where each person faces their own discomforts, strips away preconceived ideas about physical appearance, and allows themselves to be seen through different lenses. Literally. Appearance is the first layer through which we perceive ourselves in relation to deeper layers of the Self. It is what I can directly access through my work.

As art, each image contains layers that speak to these deeper dimensions of the Self, connected to personality traits, habits, traumas, and issues that affect the mind more than the body.

This is not a therapy session. But it may give you material for a few sessions with your psychologist. And that is a wonderful thing for those who arrive without knowing what to say.

Destroying a poor self-image can lead you to building a much stronger one.

For some people, this process feels unsettling. For others, it is liberating. The photographic study “Who you are when no one is watching” emerges exactly from this space.
